Round 5 of MotoGP was held on June 2 at the Mugello circuit in Italy. Dani Pedrosa was heading the championship going into the race and retained the leadership with 12 points even after finishing second on the rostrum. 2012 World Champion Jorge Lorenzo won the race and it was Cal Crutchlow’s who finished third and also his second podium of the year.
The qualifying was the most exciting, one of the season’s gripping qualifying. Jorge Lorenzo, Valentino Rossi and Cal Crutchlow were on the provisional front row until five minutes to the end time. The last five minutes were very exciting with each rider producing their personal best and the what we call the ‘Flying’ lap times.
Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo and an unusual Ducati but a usual Andrea Dovizioso completed the front row on the grid while Dani Pedrosa setting the pole position record of the Mugello circuit.
Being Valentino Rossi’s home race the number 46 fans had high expectations of the race. The expectations changed to worry with his slow start because of the clutch slipping and finally turned into disappointment and concern with the incident between him and Alvaro Bautista at turn 4. Both riders ended their race, before it really started, in the barriers. Riders were safe and that’s what counts.
Jorge pushed from the beginning of the race and took to lead early. Dani and Marc were on his tail all the time till lap 12. Lap 13 onwards Jorge started pushing a tenth of a second on every opportunity and it seemed Dani just couldn’t keep up owing to the front tyre problems.
Marquez took to second position from Dani towards the end of the race and only to crash a lap later, putting Dani back into second spot. Cal had a lonely ride in third place with Bradl in fourth. Bradl had to struggle with the Ducati’s and switched positions with Dovizioso throughout the race. It was Bradl’s season’s best finish.
Top 5 championship contenders are:
- Dani Pedrosa on Honda with 103 points
- Jorge Lorenzo on Yamaha with 91 points
- Marc Marquez on Honda with 77 points
- Cal Crutchlow on Yamaha with 71 points
- Andrea Dovizioso on Ducati with 50 points
Next race is at Catalunya circuit, home race of the Spanish riders – Jorge, Dani and Marquez. It should be an exciting one with the top 3 contenders being Spanish.
